Qualcomm also has an affordable 5G chip: Snapdragon 690 introduced

In a strategic move to accelerate the global proliferation of 5G, Qualcomm Technologies announced the Snapdragon 690 5G Mobile Platform, a chipset designed to break the price barrier for next-generation smartphones. This introduction marked a pivotal moment in 2020, shifting 5G from a premium flagship feature to an accessible technology for mid-range devices.

The Snapdragon 690 was more than just a connectivity upgrade. Built on an 8nm process, it was the first in the 6-series to integrate a 5G modem—the Snapdragon X51, supporting both critical sub-6GHz spectrums and global network standards. This ensured that manufacturers could build devices for worldwide markets. Beyond connectivity, Qualcomm focused on holistic improvements: the chip featured the new Kryo 560 CPU and Adreno 619L GPU, promising a 20% performance boost over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 675. Enhanced AI capabilities through the Hexagon Tensor Accelerator improved camera experiences with features like night mode and AI-based photography, while the Spectra iSP supported 4K HDR video capture.

Industry analysts hailed the release as a “tipping point.” By empowering OEMs like Nokia, LG, and Motorola to produce sub-$400 5G phones, Qualcomm wasn’t just selling a chipset; it was fueling an ecosystem. The Snapdragon 690 became the engine for what analysts called the “second wave” of 5G adoption, targeting value-conscious consumers and growth markets, ultimately setting the stage for 5G to become a universal standard rather than a luxury.
